Residents Reveal Barrie's Best Walking Trails

Barrie has an abundance of walking and biking trails that are suitable for anyone. From peaceful forest trails to the summer bustle of Centennial Beach, there will surely be a trail that suits your preferences. But what do the locals think? I asked residents to recommend their favourite walking trails to give an inside scoop on the best places for a stroll in Barrie!

The North Shore Trail - This gorgeous trail along the waterfront is great for hiking, biking, running, and walking. One resident said:  “It allows you to see the lake from a different viewpoint. There are usually fewer people in this section, so it’s a lot more secluded, which I find very appealing. The lake is just gorgeous, and it’s a wonderful place to come and relax after a long day.” It's partially paved and packed with great views!

Sunnidale Arboretum Trail - This area has a mix of forested and open-field trails. You'll have the opportunity to see plenty of unique tree species and flowers during the warm seasons, but it's beautiful to visit all year-round! It's about 2.3km and is a very popular area for birding, snowshoeing, and running.

Waterfront Heritage Trail - This trail is about 6.9 km and offers a historical experience around the length of Barrie’s waterfront. A local expressed that:  “This is definitely my favourite trail in Barrie. Being able to walk alongside the lake really adds to the experience. There are a lot of people walking no matter what time of day, so it feels nice and populated. The concession stands are also a nice addition. Sometimes, it’s nice to cool off with an ice cream or something while watching the day go by. It definitely is a great place to visit and spend time. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing day.” This trail is a great way for residents and visitors to learn about Barrie's history while enjoying the fresh air, great views, and many amenities on Barrie's lake shore.

Oro-Medonte Rail Trail -  This trail in completion is 28 km long, stretching from Barrie to Orillia. The trail is made up of predominantly smooth fine crushed gravel and cuts through bush, wetlands, and small communities. It's a very popular area for backpacking, cycling, birding, and cross-country skiing. Expect to see beautiful foliage and a variety of wildlife along this trail.

Ardagh Bluffs Trail: Ardagh Bluffs natural area consists of 17 km of recreational trails and has a total area of 518 acres. The area houses a variety of species, so keep an eye out for furry friends while you're on your stroll. The trails are great for walking or hiking!  A fond resident said: “Walking through Ardagh Bluffs is always a wonderful experience. It’s stunning how it can completely transform you into a different world. You seem to forget that you’re within a city with over 100,000 people. It truly feels like you’re in a forest in the middle of nowhere. It’s definitely a great place to walk your dog and get away from the stress of life."

So ditch the car, lace up your shoes, and embark on an adventure on one of Barrie's many walking trails! With hidden gems offering breathtaking scenery, there are perfect paths waiting for you to discover. Enjoy experiencing the beauty of Barrie on foot!
